I was wondering if any of you can tell me what are the conditions to get the follwoing message when creating a new customer. Message code is tccom11016 and description is "SMI not implemented. 'Maintain Features' not allowed".

the parameter for smi implemented is set to "NO", so the SMI features are not usable.

What is (are) the SMI features in maintain customers?

The reason why this warning message pops up is when the SMI module is NOT impleneted and the user cliks the "Continue" button in the Maintain Customers session.

When you hit the Continue button it starts a SMI session. In this session extra attributes of the customer can be registered. The possible list of attributes is user defined; like: "Does the customer play golf yes/no", "did visit Inforum before",...
Within SMI these extra attributes can be used to base campaigns on, like sending a letter to all golf playing customers.

If you do not use SMI then it also makes no sense to register extra attributes and therefor the message when you hit the continue button.
