Hello,

We have recently bought a new server for Baan. We are wondering about how to dimension the partitions of the hard disks. The server has: 2 x 18 Gb + 3 x 36 Gb, with a dual channel RAID controler.

Our first ideas was:

2 x 18 Gb -> RAID 1, wiht two partitions: 4 Gb (O.S) and 12 Gb (Baan)
3 x 36 Gb -> RAID 5, with tow partitions: 20 Gb (Oracle) + 50 Gb (free).

We are going to install Baan IV with Oracle, over windows 2000 server.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I thing that the suggested partitioning is good.
Maybe you should leave more space for database.

Oracle must have enought "air" to breathe or you jobs in Baan will simply "die" ... :)

In general, Oracle and one big RAID 5 array is not a good performance match.

I would highly suggest acquiring and reading the "Oracle8i DBA Handbook" (or equivalent for your version of Oracle) by Kevin Loney. There are a couple of very good chapters on performance logical and physical database file layouts. In addition check out Dave Sisk's Oracle on NT web site, in particular http://www.ipass.net/~davesisk/oont_performance.htm starting at the section on: "OLTP (On-line transaction processing) workloads"

Baan, Oracle, and NT can really scream if configured correctly. But most people make the mistake of creating one large RAID array for Oracle and then wonder why the peformance is poor. Take the time to understand how Oracle reads and writes to disks and you can end up with stellar performance.
