Hello Everybody

I was working only on tools and development since last 3 years. I have very limited knowledge of Admin, installations, Unix etc but now I want to learn that. As they say, it's never too late.

I understand it is complicated and difficult to explain in short, but it will be great if anyone could guide me where to start with and how to go about it.

I have some basic questions regarding this. I will appreciate if anyone could help me.
1. What is porting set and exactly what is it used for?
2. What is purpose of 'Protocol' and 'Port Number' in BW configuration properties?
3. What are environment variables? And what is its purpose?
4. How does database server get configured?
5. Purpose of each directory in $BSE.
6. How do third party integrations (eg. Crystal Report) work?

Thanks in Advance.

I'll try to help you as far as I know it....

1: portingset is the name for the binaries in Baan. Everything you can execute

beshell; bdbpre.. bdbpost...and so on. It is like in old DOS the *.exe and com files and a few other things.....

2: the standrad port is 512 and the protocol is TCPIP
you can configure them to other ports but then on both, client and server

3: the variables are for Baan: BSE; BSE_TMP; PATH;

4: ???

5: I only know it for BaaniV maybe in LN they are different...
application ... here is your Software placed all VRC
dict Dictonary (Packet Combination and table defenition
lib... all configuration files
bin excecutables from baan
tools the standard software everything from package tt
include for programming part which are working with includes
tmp temp files
and a few more ....

I hope that helps a little

I would suggest to get Administrator's Training as well as refer to the Tools Technical manual to get more information on the file system layout, binaries usage etc.

There are few links on the System Architecture of Baan to get you started:
System Architecture (http://www.baanboard.com/node/41)
Baan Technical Architecture (http://www.baanboard.com/node/1770)

You can use the Search Forums (http://www.baanboard.com/baanboard/search.php)and also the CMS Search (Drupal) (http://www.baanboard.com/search/node/) to look up more info on this site.

Refer to the Baan Support knowledge base for more info:
