Hi all,

Some of you probably noticed that the default font on the site has changed. I decided to give Bitstream Vera Sans a whirl as I think this font face looks nicer compared to the rather dull Verdana that was previously used.

Let me know if it is be considered an improvement or if it hurts your eyes!

Note that if Vera Sans is not installed on your PC, you can download it here:

Linux: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/ttf-bitstream-vera/1.10/
Windows: http://www.dafont.com/en/font.php?file=bitstream_vera_sans

Or alternatively use the bundle from the attached zip file.

Patrick,

In the new font, characters like b,o,c,d (everything that is a part of the circle) look extra bold. I am not sure if this is by design or something on my computer. The extra boldness is not seen in the image of the font on dafont.com website.

Vamsi,

The fonts look fine on my PC, see the attached screenshot. I have also added a zip file with all the Bitstream Vera fonts in the first post of the the thread. Perhaps re-installing the font helps? Can you otherwise post a screenshot of the strange looking characters?

Anybody else having the same problem as Vamsi?

Hi Patrick,

I'm experiencing the same phenomenom even after reinstally the fonts. See screenshot. This is a bit disconcerting.

- On my Windows XP system the round letters also appear more bold making the text look less tidy.
- The lowercase L and uppercase i look the same. They only differ a bit in size ( l / I ). In text not a big proble but in coding....

Hi all,

I have decided to revert back to the old style for the time being. I do want to cause a hassle with a (larger) group of our members with some characters displaying in an odd way. I have found some reports of similar cases on the internet so it may be a structural problem, either of the font itself or its rendering engine.
If I can get fix on why this problem is happening on how to solve it, we can change around again.
