Hello,

here a question about the backup solution for INFOR LN 6.1.

Actually to perform the backup of the erp server i have:

And HP StorageWorks DAT 72x10 Tape Autoloader (http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/dat7210ta/index.html)

This device is compliant with the HP StorageWorks One-Button Disaster Recovery, providing the ability to restore the system quickly and effortlessly with the touch of a single button, eliminating the need for operating system and software CDs.

I used Hp data protector express (http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storage/software/datapexp/index.html) before and now Symantec Backup exec (http://www.symantec.com/backupexec/index.jsp) to try to backup this erp server.

These both software are supposed to be compliant with the ODBR.

I have some problem to backup fully my system and the database.

My idea is to backup daily / weekly / monthly all the system more the erp database. Like this in case of crash i just have to recover everything with the ODBR button.

As you can see in the log generated with the software i used before ( the hp one), i cannot backup the database file .

I'm no expert on this subject, but is the backup being done with users on the system or jobs still running? It looks like the data is changing & therefore cannot be verified

no the erp is not go live yet. No one use expect the guys in charge of the developpement.

Your log has above mentioned failed objects....

Could you tell us what "D:\ERP_DATA" contains and pls tell us whether ur BSE vaariable is pointing to "C:\Program Files\Baan".

Also, about the backup software you are using, does it allow backup of application that is up and runnning? bacuse most of the failed objects get updated regularly on OS/Application level...

No, havent used. We had Data Protector at our previous client....

But can you check whether online backups are allowed on "Symantec Exec" Backup system?

Yes online backup is allowed on Symantec Backup Exec. You just have to use AOFO(Advanced Open File Option)..from what i read..

Sorry to take your hopes away, but life and backup is obviously a bit more difficult, than you approached it here.

So first of all, naturally all your errors are due to the fact, that you try to backup open files of running applications. But unfortunately the "Advanced open file" option is not your saviour, because it is just a trick of the backup SW to delay the backup of open files, until they are not open any more. This works fine under the assumptions of temporarily open files, but does not work at all for a running database.

If you are new to the whole backup story, then stick to KISS and try an offline backup, by shutting down Baan and the database below first.

Second of all, do not mix desaster recovery (OBDR) and normal restore/backup scenarios. The requirements are very different and so are the advised implementations.

I can only advise you to take the whole backup topic very serious and if requierd, get some professioanl advise on it.

Actually, with Symantec Exec Backup we succeeded to backup everything and recover with odbr !

By they way,

the safest way to do a full backup is still the ghost image under dos. Only to be sure that all the files are backed up !

This is an incredible thread - like someone asking
"my car won't start - there is a light burning saying ..fuel empty..

And instead of all natural reason, someone takes the time to explain about gasoline driven motor vehicles and their basics (*bow to Marcus*).
And then the expert that started the thead enlightens the community with something like "diesel driven catarpillars are the best anyway".
