is a combination of an Baan IVc4 App-Server (HPUX) and a MS-SQL DB-Server possible?

Yes and no.

Yes - it could be done with BaanNET

No - supporting and mantaining it would be a nightmare.

if you're looking for a DB that's cheaper than Oracle look to DB2
for unix.
