my question was while deciding the item codification what all
things should keep in mind wrt to product code & item group so that we can reduce the size of the item codification

Keep item codification simple and easy to understand. Think of the people who have to work with the codes. Sooner or later every 'speaking' item codification will come to it's limits.
We have a small number of items but a high volume of manual transactions with these items - so the itemcode is numeric (easy tio handle on the keyboard).

If the volume of the Items is less then either of Numeric Coding/Alpha coding will not be a problem. But if it is Huge, then the users will certainly be against the usage of numbers.

I have worked in an envirnoment where you have 200,000 components and still they resorted to numeric coding system. Now the end user has to look at the description more closely everytime he is entering in an item for the transaction. It is too easy to make an error with the Numeric Items.

By the way how many Item groups are you planning to have and what is the volume of Items that you are talking about?

Hi,

a good tool for item coding and classification is the Baan Product Classificator in the package ti.
This module supports the user in the definition of item codes, “speaking” in base to the necessities, and in the search of products in base to their classification.
In the case of a high number of items and a high rate of new codes generation I hold both necessary to use “speaking” codes.
