This is baan help

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEFINITION
Alternative items are items that can serve as substitutes for items
in case they cannot be delivered or used.

Example:
Item: 110110 Shower tap Duo, light yellow A

Alternative Description Priority Reverse Inter-
Item changeable

110111 Shower tap Duo, l. yellow B 0 Yes Yes
110114 Shower tap Duo, dark yellow 1 Yes No
110117 Kitchen tap Duo, red 2 No No

The priority (a high figure represents a low priority, and vice versa)
determines which alternative item comes first.
"Reverse" indicates whether the item (110110) itself is also an
alternative to the alternative items (110111, 110114 and 110117).

"Interchangeable" indicates whether the alternative item can always
replace the original item (110110) in case of a stock-out. This applies
to "Duo light yellow A" and "Duo light yellow B". But "Duo dark yellow"
and "Duo red" cannot simply be interchanged because of the difference in
color.

Hi mr

Thanks to your reply. One more question, there is another option- replacement. Can u tell me the difference of these three options, i.e reverse, interchangable, replacement?

Thanks again.

Also from the Baan (LN) help:
Alternative items

Alternative items are items that serve as a substitute for the standard item if the standard item cannot be delivered or is being replaced.
If several items can be substituted for a standard item, you can assign a priority code to each alternative item.
Standard items can be substituted by

Alternative items.
Replacement items.
Alternative items

A standard item can be substituted by an alternative if both items have the same (technical) properties. Alternative items must be of the following types:

Purchased.
Manufactured.
Generic.

Reversible alternative item
The original item is the substitute for the alternative item and vice versa. When you create an alternative item or change an alternative item from non-reversible to reversible, a record will automatically be created for the reversed situation. When you delete a reversible alternative item, SSA ERP also deletes the reversed record or changes it into non-reversible.
For example, if a red item is a reversible alternative for a green item, then the green item is also a substitute for the red item.

Interchangeable alternative item
The original and alternative item have similar properties and are completely interchangeable in all situations.

Replacement items
The alternative item can be used as a replacement for the original item. A replaced item always has different properties than the original item.
For example, a supplier replaces a cleaning machine, if an engineering change has been made to that machine.
Several kinds of replacement exist:
The item is replaced by another item.
The item has replaced another item.
The item has replaced another item, and is replaced by another item itself.
