Without unit effectivity , can we trace the progress of the sales order i.e prodn order status, purchase order status and the expected date of completion of the sales order

Use pegging functions avaiable in EP modules.
Or an easier method is check the session planned inventory transactions. Normally the production orders of the end products should be created when your sales guys want to check the status.

Project code and unit effectivity, I think, are only the solid things that can be used for traceability between sales order and production order. Anything else will only puzzle you.
