In BaaN 4C4 the default Item length is a string of 16 characters.
Can someone tell me the possibility and consequences of a longer Item number (e.g. 25 characters)

You can do that, but you need to reconfigure all the tables (Appx 520) which are having domain tcitem. first consult to the local baan support before doing.
