We use the inventory date to manage shelf life. When an item is receipted the shelf life expiry date is set as the inventory date. :)
However, we have procedures where we can extend the shelf life, how can we change the inventory date?

If the outbound priority field in item - warehousing is set to FIFO or LIFO, then it should be possible to update the inventory date.

Thanks Jeff, the items are FIFO and the inventory date is changed to shelf life expiry date at receipt. The problem is when the shelf life has expired (items are now in stock)and we want to extend the shelf life, there appears to be no mechanism to change the inventory date.

Are you using Lot Control? If so you can go to the Item - Lot record, update the Lot Date and that should update the stock point's inventory date.

We are not using lot control, trying to keep away from it if possible! Any other thoughts?

Mike,
it is not possible to change the inventory date other then by changing the lot date as mentioned by Jeff.
For not lot controlled items the inventory date is fixed.

A stock to stock transfer will reset the inventory date, as shown in the screenshot.
NB: the item does not need to be lot controlled to use this session.
If this is something that needs to be done on a regular basis, email me, there are tools to simplify such obscure tasks in Baan IV.

Thanks Andre,
I did not know it was possible in BaanIV. In later releases (as on B50c where I think Mike is working) this is not possible.
