In my company some of the products are such that they often go in multiple shipments. I wanted to know if there is any way to break a shipment of 1NO. into smaller parts.

On the sales order line you could use the Sales BOM. Select the line and via Specific menu go to 'Copy Bill of Material to Sales Order'.
In this way you can ship the components instead of the main item.
