How does one define a storage unit for an item in ERP Ln.

A separate storage unit cannot be defined in LN. However some of the warehousing sessions (in cycle counting and inventory adjustments) do allow the user to update the storage unit 'on the fly' and then enter the qty in the storage unit. LN does not allow you to maintain a different storage unit as in baan4. You can explore the functionality of Handling units.

Thanks rkathait for information . I did notice the storage unit on the fly behaviour . It's rather strange . Is it going to be permanently so .

Handling units promise lot of functionality though with more complexity . How handling units can be used as storage units the way it's in B4 .

I believe SSA/Infor is not planning to add a storage unit field in item base data, at least in the near future.

I haven't explored Handling unit, it definately is much more complex functionality to be used just for storage units.
