I had a private message sent to me in December, but was not aware of its existance for a number of months. When a reply is made to a thread that I make, I receive an email. Is there any way that a member of the board can be notified via email when a Private Message is received?

Or could the fact that there are unread messages for a logged on member, be more clearly displayed?

There are options to get notified indeed. Go to:

User CP > Edit Options

Then check the options displayed in the attachment:
